Insuring your Kayak this Summer

Ahh, sweet summertime. It’s hot and humid and your favorite summer activity includes a paddle and a big open body of water. Kayaking is a fun-filled summer activity to enjoy, but like most other things, there are risks and dangers. Most of the time, the activity isn’t too dangerous, but it’s absolutely possible for something to go wrong. From personal injuries, to injuring someone else, to damaging the kayak beyond repair, it’s important to take these things into consideration.

So, how will one be covered in the event of an accident involving a kayak.

If you’re a homeowner, you’ve got insurance to protect your belongings. Surprisingly, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover kayaks. Typically, the watercraft must be 26 feet or less to be covered fully. On some policies, even a borrowed kayak is covered under your own homeowner’s policy. If your kayak was a more expensive one, look into additional coverages to ensure full protection. It’s very important to talk to your insurance agent about what exactly your insurance will cover. Don’t ever assume it’ll be covered—there are plenty of exclusions that’ll cause your claim to be denied.

If you’re spending big bucks on your “toy”, insurance can be your peace of mind.
